A chiropractic examination is similar to a physical examination at a medical doctor’s office but looks more closely at posture, movement, and the condition of the spine. Undressing is not usually necessary for it. As part of the examination, it sometimes is necessary to take X-rays of the spine to better assess your condition. The chiropractic examination gives the chiropractor the information needed to find areas of subluxation and to create a treatment plan specific to your needs and situation.

This is the most common type of adjusting and there are several techniques that adjust using only the hands. Dr. Schuneman, DC is trained extensively in giving adjustments by hand. Often these adjustments are accompanied by a “popping” noise but it is not necessary for an adjustment to take place.

Some chiropractic tables have special “drop pieces” that can be used to assist the adjustments. These tables have sections that can be elevated an inch or two and then “drop” back into place while the adjustment is given. The adjustments still use the hands but with the addition of the drop.

There are several different adjusting instruments that can be used to make adjustments. These often provide a more “gentle” approach to adjusting and usually are not accompanied by the “popping” sound. Dr. Schuneman, DC trained and uses an adjusting instrument called an Activator. This hand held device gives a specific impulse to give adjustments and can also be used to help relax tight muscles.

Dr. Schuneman, DC is also trained in several low force techniques. These use only a few pounds of pressure or less to make corrections. These techniques often use sustained pressure without a quick thrust. These techniques are safe for everyone from the newborn baby to the most sensitive individual. Again, it is unusual to have the “popping” sound with these adjustments, though it does occasionally happen.

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical approach to treating such conditions resulting from a disc bulge or herniation such as back or neck pain, sciatica, or other numbness/tingling in the extremities. Spinal decompression works by applying traction to the spine to take pressure off the discs in between the vertebrae. It is thought to reduce the pressure within the disc and may even be able to help reduce the disc bulge or herniation. The traction also allows more nutrients to enter the disc to help it to heal.
