Are you reaching for pain pills every time your back flares up? Have you ever wondered whether they are actually helping your body heal, or simply turning down the volume on the pain?
As a Chiropractor in Colorado Springs that patients can trust, I want to offer an honest, practical perspective.
Pain pills can have a place in healthcare. In some situations, short-term medication may be appropriate and necessary under the guidance of a qualified medical professional. However, medication often focuses on how pain feels, while chiropractic care focuses on why the pain may be happening in the first place.
That is the difference between masking a symptom and addressing a contributing cause.
My mission at Life Symmetry Chiropractic is simple: to help people understand their health options and support the body’s natural ability to function, adapt, and heal- without automatically defaulting to drugs or surgery.
Let’s use a simple analogy.
Imagine your phone has static on the line. You can lower the volume, and the conversation may become less irritating. But lowering the volume does not necessarily fix the damaged wire causing the static.
Pain pills may work similarly. They can reduce your awareness of discomfort, but they usually do not correct restricted joint motion, poor movement patterns, muscle imbalance, or mechanical stress affecting the spine and surrounding tissues.
This does not mean every pain medication is useless. It means we should ask a better question:
What is creating the pain, and what options may help address that problem?
At Life Symmetry Chiropractic, our chiropractic examination looks at posture, movement, and the condition of the spine. That information helps me develop a plan based on your individual needs instead of treating every person with the same approach.

When pain is intense, it is understandable to want fast relief. But relying on medication alone can create several challenges.
This is where the difference between conventional “sickcare” and proactive healthcare becomes important. Sickcare often waits for symptoms to become severe and then tries to suppress them. A wellness-oriented approach asks what may be interfering with your ability to move and function in the first place.
The research conversation has become especially interesting in 2026.
A systematic review and meta-analysis indexed by PubMed examined chiropractic care and prescription opioid use among adults with noncancer spine pain. Across 20 studies involving more than six million people, chiropractic care was associated with approximately 64% lower odds of receiving a prescription opioid compared with standard medical care alone.
The review also found that timing may matter. People who received chiropractic care within the first 30 days of presenting with spine-related pain had lower odds of receiving opioids than people who began chiropractic care later.
Now, I want to be careful and transparent: much of this evidence comes from observational studies, so it shows an association rather than proving that chiropractic care alone caused the reduction. The authors also rated the certainty of evidence as very low and called for more rigorous research.
Still, why is this meaningful?
Because the pattern is consistent, when people have access to non-drug care early, they may be less likely to move down a treatment path centered on escalating medications.
A separate 2025 study led by University Hospitals compared spinal manipulative therapy with an initial ibuprofen pathway for people with new low back pain. The chiropractic care group was associated with lower rates of opioid prescriptions, long-term opioid use, and opioid use disorder over two years. You can review the study summary from University Hospitals.
Again, this is not a promise that chiropractic care eliminates the need for medication for every person. It is evidence that early, non-pharmacological care deserves to be part of the conversation.
At Life Symmetry Chiropractic, I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all adjustment or a rushed plan.
Our approach may include the Palmer Package, which brings together Gonstead, Diversified, and Thompson techniques. Depending on your examination, comfort level, age, injury history, and goals, I may also use Activator methods, Applied Kinesiology, low-force techniques, or other appropriate approaches.
The goal is not to force your body into a predetermined position. The goal is to select a personalized approach that fits you.
A chiropractic adjustment may help improve joint motion and reduce stress around a joint and the surrounding nervous system. As explained in our guide to what a chiropractic adjustment is, an adjustment can be performed by hand or with an instrument. A popping sound may occur, but it is not required for an adjustment to be effective.
For people who prefer a gentler approach, an Activator instrument can deliver a specific impulse without the twisting or popping some patients worry about.

Here is the simplest way I explain the difference:
| Pain pills | Personalized chiropractic care |
|---|---|
| May reduce the perception of pain | May address contributing movement and joint issues |
| Can be useful for short-term symptom control | Focuses on function, mobility, and the body’s healing environment |
| May cause side effects or dependency concerns | Is drug-free and non-surgical |
| May allow activity before the underlying issue is ready | Encourages an individualized plan and appropriate progression |
| Usually treats the symptom | Works toward fixing the cause vs. masking the symptom |
Of course, not every pain problem is chiropractic in nature. Severe trauma, infection, fracture, cancer, progressive weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, or other warning signs require prompt medical evaluation. A responsible chiropractor should recognize when a patient needs another type of care or a collaborative referral.
That is not “chiropractic versus medicine.” It is good healthcare.
For many people with mechanical back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, or joint injuries, chiropractic care may be a reasonable first-line, drug-free option.
Why wait weeks or months for a problem to become harder to manage? Why start with a medication pathway when a thorough evaluation may reveal conservative options?
If you are looking for Natural pain management in Colorado Springs, the first step is not guessing. It is getting clear information about what may be contributing to your symptoms.
At Life Symmetry Chiropractic, your care may also include recommendations related to movement, nutrition, whole-food-based supplements, posture, and daily habits. These pieces matter because your spine does not exist in isolation from the rest of your lifestyle.

Pain pills may temporarily lower the volume of pain. But if your goal is lasting improvement, you deserve to ask whether the cause is being addressed.
Chiropractic care is not a magic solution, and I will never promise that one adjustment fixes every problem. What I can offer is a careful evaluation, a personalized plan, and a drug-free option focused on helping your body move and function as well as possible.
